Corre corre corre corazón
Part of my heart still lives in Mexico City and I often find my mind wandering back to my favorite spots and memories there. We had tentative plans for a return visit this month to celebrate our 8th anniversary, but it seems travel and even restaurants are a thing of the past for the foreseeable future. Instead we went to the garden where our wedding reception was held, a place surprisingly close to our house and which we had not visited since our wedding day.
It feels strange to me to have passed six months without leaving the country. I thought it best to reminisce by posting our Mexico City itinerary. It doesn’t have everything…there’s just too much to include. You could live there for hundreds of years straight and not run out of something new to see or do. For convenience, the short restaurant list is below, but definitely peruse our full itinerary if you plan to visit. Two sample itineraries with our families and friends are here and here. Finally, for those who are looking to attend a Spanish language program, I cannot recommend my professors highly enough. They are such incredibly patient and knowledgeable teachers.
La Capital – really unique and high quality Mexican food and not very expensive, be sure to order the carajillo as your dessert cocktail
Pujol – “an experience,” Michelin Star restaurant, hella expensive, do the taco tasting, need to make reservation months in advance
Maxim Bistro – just as good as Pujol in my humble opinion, but not as expensive or requiring such advance reservations
Forever Vegano (various locations) or Vegan Inc (inside Miyana mall) – really delicious vegan food
Camomila – my favorite brunch/lunch place
Pan Comido – another favorite lunch/light dinner place
Saks – Charles’s favorite fancy breakfast/brunch place
Galanga – amazing Thai food, need a reservation
Guli Hagadol – Israeli café. Soooo good.
La Mora – churros
Chinampa – Charles’s go to place for tacos al pastor because they are 2 for 1 on Mondays and Wednesdays. We always went to the one on Calle Rio Lerma by the embassy
Casa de Toños – traditional Mexican food restaurant. Order the vegetarian pozole for sure.
Café Nin – to obtain pastries and breakfast breads made by Rosetta bakery. Here you can try the delicious rosemary pastry bread or the traditional Pan de Muerto
Street Food
Tianguis – Saturdays inside Parque Lincoln for quesadillas
The famous by word of mouth chilaquiles lady on the corner of corner of Alfonso Reyes and Tamaulipas in Condesa neighborhood (Sunday mornings only) – if you want a days’ worth of calories and carbohydrates in one meal
Drinks
Limantour – fancy cocktails, trendy, need reservation mostly, I don’t love that still people smoke in there so be prepared for that
Hanky Panky – very cool speak easy, amazing cocktails, need reservation and even then if “members” appear, they will take the members ahead of your reservation
Clandestina (for Mexcal) – you can taste various mezcals and have a really nice mezcal cocktail
