The post will be brief, but the pictures will say a lot! We are trying to soak in all the lovely sights, sounds, smells, and tastes of Mexico before we leave, which includes taking time for photo opportunities around the city whenever we encounter them…hence the angel wings and the Glorieta de la Lealtad.
In April each year, there is a flower festival in Polanco (our neighborhood). Most of the shops along Masaryk, which some have referred to as the Rodeo Drive of Mexico City, decorate their store fronts with THOUSANDS of flowers. They create their logos in flowers and construct animals, arches, and all manner of creative displays. We walked up and down the street, just smelling flowers everywhere in the air! The aroma alone is stunning, but then you can see millions of flowers everywhere you turn your head. It’s AMAZING! Note my beloved jacarandas as well.
Yesterday, we ran the Mexico City half marathon. It would have been ideal to have more than two weeks of training, but we only found out about it two weeks beforehand so c’est la vie. In any case, we finished in 2.5 hours, which I am pretty proud of since we barely did any training and we’re thirty-seven years old! My favorite part of the whole thing was the pink ladies with the sign that said in Spanish, “Run! The Kenyans are already drinking your beer!” I didn’t do any exercise the day before in order to rest my muscles. Of course, in classic Charles form, he played tennis AND basketball on Saturday and stayed out until 2am to hear live jazz before we ran Sunday morning. Some of us have different paces and energy levels.
I’ve also now started to teach yoga in Spanish. This is HUGE for me. Even if I know a lot of Spanish, it is sometimes hard for me to feel confidence speaking it. Teaching yoga has helped me to just get the words out even if the verb conjugation, preposition, or pronunciation isn’t exactly right. It’s brutal for me, but I didn’t want to say no to the opportunity. I am contracted out to corporate clients and for this reason, I had a photo shoot of me doing some poses. I think I am featured in the Instagram stories of this site, but since I don’t have an account, I can’t see for sure. https://www.instagram.com/yogiz_happiness_at_work/
In early July, we took a hike in Nevada de Toluca, which is about 1.5 hours’ drive outside of Mexico City. Here you can hike a crater and view some lovely lakes inside. At over 15,000 feet, it was pretty cold and at the time we visited, it happened to hailing, thundering, and lightning so we didn’t stay too long. It reminded me of something out of Lord of the Rings…very beautiful with all the rocks and mist.
Last, but not least…some of you already know that I got to be an extra in a low budget Argentine rock video. Here for your viewing enjoyment.
More updates to come!
